Zone description : Located on South Island, the sunken ruins of the Labyrinth Zone are one of Sonic the Hedgehog’s (1991) most memorable locations. With tunnels being absolutely confusing and impenetrable, the Labyrinth Zone was incredibly remarkable and unforgiving, which still gives many players nervous flashbacks. The Labyrinth Zone was the first water stage in Sonic’s gaming history, and as if the constant risk of drowning and slow-motion with clunky underwater platforming physics weren’t enough, the Labyrinth Zone is incredibly confusing, full of traps and extremely annoying enemies that lurk underground, attacking at the most inopportune moments.

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)

One unfortunate day, the evil genius Dr. Ivo Robotnik decided to build his evil empire with the might of an army of robots. The Doctor goes to South Island to find six Chaos Emeralds and use them to build the ultimate weapon – the Death Egg, a space station that would become the capital of the evil empire. Once on the island, Robotnik used his army of robots to capture animals who live on the island and put them inside the robots, charging his machines with the energy of the animals.

Soon, the supersonic hero, Sonic the Hedgehog, arrives on the island and begins rescuing the animals by destroying the robots and searching for the Chaos Emeralds. The Labyrinth Zone is the fourth location Sonic has visited. As Sonic wades through tangled, flooded tunnels, trying to avoid the cunning traps placed by an ancient civilization and Robotnik himself, he eventually catches up with the evil doctor. Robotnik tries to escape by using the traps located in the ruins to his advantage, but neither water nor traps stop Sonic, and the blue hero severely damages the villain’s Egg Mobile and saves the animals imprisoned in the Labyrinth Zone.
