Theme of Merlina [Sonic and the Black Knight]
The granddaughter of the great wizard Merlin, Merlina is a capable and intelligent sorceress, capable of summoning entities from other worlds and other tricks. Her grandfather instilled in her a love for her kingdom of King Arthur story book and the world around her from childhood, but this love was transformed into sadness when Merlina realized that this world, like all things, would sooner or later come to an end. Unwilling to accept the hopelessness of the universe, Merlina decided on a desperate plan to perpetuate her world, at the cost of many lives and broken fates.
Merlina is not an evil person, but her sadness has so consumed her that she is unable to contain it without expressing it in destructive actions. Merlina is willing to kill, terrorize and deceive in order to achieve her goal; she is a very good deceiver in particular. But in the end, Sonic will prove to her that the beauty of the world also lies in its mortality, which will finally bring the young sorceress peace.

Merlina is a powerful sorceress of remarkable intelligence, possessing almost no weaknesses. In the form of the Dark Queen, she is virtually invincible, and the only way to defeat her is with a magic sword that can shatter anything.
Sonic and the Black Knight (2009)
Merlina is the granddaughter of the powerful sorcerer Merlin, who lives in the world of the King Arthur stories. Ever since she was a child, her grandfather instilled in her a love for the world they live in, which has turned out to have completely unexpected consequences for him. Many years after Merlin’s death, King Arthur became a dark knight, taking advantage of creatures from the Underworld. He became utterly invulnerable through the power of the Excalibur Scabbard and wreaked havoc across the kingdom. Merlina, desperate to defeat the dark knight, summoned a creature from another world, which turned out to be Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic faced Arthur in battle, but Merlina stopped the hedgehog and teleported him along with herself. After explaining that Sonic himself could not defeat the King, the sorceress took the hedgehog to the place where the ancient sacred sword Caliburn rested in the stone. But alas, even the power of this sword was not enough to defeat Arthur and Sonic had to go on a journey to become stronger as a knight and defeat the dark king.
Finally defeating Arthur, Sonic takes the Excalibur Scabbard and returns it to Merlina. Suddenly, using the power of the Scabbard, Merlina begins to spread Underworld’s energy and send monsters into the area. Merlina hated the mortality of her own world and wished to perpetuate it forever, and in order to do so, she wished to cover the entire world with a shell of Underworld that would allow the world to last forever. Sonic faced Merlina in battle but did not stand a few minutes against the power of the Dark Queen. In the end, Caliburn was broken and Sonic fell defeated. Suddenly, three sacred swords materialized in the room and combined with Caliburn, the four swords formed the most powerful sword, Excalibur. Using Excalibur’s power, Sonic defeats Merlina, but instead of finishing her off, he explains to her that it is in the mortality of the world that it’s beauty lies.
