Tender, dreamy and vulnerable, a lonely child in a distant space. Mortally ill, Maria lived with her grandfather Gerald Robotnik on the research space colony Ark and had essentially never been to Earth and had absolutely no idea what life was like there. Her loneliness and shared desire to be on Earth brought her closer to one of her grandfather’s project results, the Ultimate Life Form, Shadow the Hedgehog.
Like Shadow, Maria probably didn’t understand the meaning of her existence, just as he dreamed of going to Earth, and just as he was very lonely, so they spent most of their time together.
Perhaps it was Maria’s lack of understanding of the meaning of her life that pushed her to sacrifice herself. It was her act in the distant future that gave all humanity hope.

Maria is weak and never supposed to be in any fights. Even so, her incredible courage played its role in the end.

By herself, Maria never appeared in the games, but she had a huge impact on the story. Many years before the events of the games, Maria was born into the Robotnik family, being terminally ill. Her grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik, was not desperate and decided to find a way to fight the disease. To do so, Gerald moved her to the space research facility Ark and conducted research to create the Ultimate Life Form, an eternal life form with the power to protect all mankind. Research into eternal life would allow Gerald to find a way to extend Maria’s life.
Alas, Maria did not know what it was like to live on Earth and was very lonely on the colony. She sometimes played with another child, a small boy (GUN Commander) but most of the time she was alone. Eventually, Gerald’s project ended in success and Ultimate Life Form was created – it was a black hedgehog named Shadow. Shadow and Maria became instant friends and spent most of their time together. Unsurprisingly, the two had never been to Earth, were both very lonely, and both wanted to find their destiny and believed it was on Earth that they would find it. So month after month passed and the long dream of spending time on the planet became an outlet for Maria and Shadow, Maria and Shadow were very close.
The creation of the Ultimate Life Form did not go unnoticed. Soon, international special forces raided the colony, killed many scientists and archived the projects. Shadow and Maria, in an attempt to escape the soldiers, set out for the escape pods. Once there, Maria, suddenly for Shadow, trapped him alone in the escape pod. A soldier ran in and pointed a gun at her. There was nothing Shadow could do and only watched helplessly as Maria made her last strong decision. “Shadow, i beg of you, please do it for me… for a better future! For all people who live on that planet… give them a chance to be happy… Let them live for their dreams. Shadow, I know you can do it. That’s the reason why you were brought into this world. Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog.” Maria pressed the pod’s release button and a shot rang out.
These words gave Shadow insight into who he was and why he was created. It was the memory of Maria that gave Shadow the strength to go on living for the promise that he had made. This act of Maria in the future was the reason for the repeated salvation of humanity. This is how Maria found her destiny.
