In the Level Waterfall Chase from Sonic Omens you actually can stop Sonic from speeding towards the water by either holding the left control stick backwards or just letting go of the control stick. When you do, you can chill and embrace these jungle ruins while the water goes havoc left and right.

No need even to push left, you can just not push anything, Sonic will stop by himself. And yup, that place is totally safe just as one more place on that stage (right after you’re exiting the first cave)
